Creating a Custom Koi Fish Floor with Handmade Cement Tiles

In one of our recent projects, a client came to us with a beautiful concept: to create a floor that feels like a koi pond beneath your every step. The vision was to bring the calm and grace of koi fish into their daily environment, making it feel like the fish are swimming gently below, moving with life as you move above. What followed was a rewarding journey, from hand-drawn illustration to custom-designed, handcrafted cement tiles. Turning imagination into something real, functional, and truly unique.
The inspiration behind this custom tile project was both peaceful and artistic. Our client wanted to transform their floor into experience — not just a surface, but space that captures the calming essence of a koi pond.
To express this vision, our client provided a hand-drawn sketch featuring a group of koi fish in motion, capturing the natural rhythm and grace of a real pond. They selected a subtle yet vivid palette: cool blues to reflect clear water, warm tones of orange, red, yellow, and black for the koi, and soft greens to suggest lotus leaves floating nearby. Together, these elements formed the foundation for truly immersive tile design.
With the sketch and color choices in hand, we began carefully translating the design into digital format. The stage involving balancing creativity with precision. We adapted the hand-drawn elements into a digital format, adjusting details and proportions to ensure the final layout would repeat smoothly across multiple tiles, that the koi would appear to swim across the floor in one continuous flow.
We paid close attention to how the fish would flow from one tile to the next. The goal was to preserve the natural movement of the koi and create seamless visual when the tiles were installed. Every line, shape, and color block was refined with care, we always in close communication with the client, who remained an active part of the process from start to finish.
With the design finalized, we moved into a production phase, the heart of our work, where tradition and craftsmanship come together, passed down over generations. Each cement tile was made entirely by hand using time-honored techniques that allow us to preserve the character and richness of the design.
A custom brass mold was created to capture the lines of the koi and the organic shapes of lotus leaves. Color pigments were prepared and carefully poured into mold, one section at a time, to form the colorful surface layer. Once the pattern was complete, a strong cement backing was added, and the tile was pressed and left to cure naturally.
Unlike mass-produced tiles, this process isn’t rushed. The tiles dry naturally, allowing for greater durability and a beautiful matte finish that enhances their handcrafted feel. The result is a collection of tiles where no two are exactly alike — each carrying subtle variations that echo the organic nature of the pond that inspired them.
The result was a beautifully crafted set of tiles that transformed the client’s space into a visual koi pond. As the tiles were installed, the koi seemed to swim beneath the surface, their movement connecting from one tile to the next. The soft blue background evoked the stillness of clear water, while the vivid fish added energy and warmth. The touches of green from the lotus leaves added a final, grounding layer of natural detail.
What had started as a simple sketch was now a handcrafted tile installation, both artistic and functional — that invites people to pause, observe, and appreciate the beauty beneath them.
